There are four competitive strokes and seven events. In Swimming: The Sport we cover the basic strokes, events and strategies for competing. In the Swimming Pyramid you can see the progression swimmers go through as they become better and older competitors. Clothing and equipment and nutrition are also covered. There’s a section for the Senior Swimmer and a section to help parents of swimmers understand their role.

So just how far does a swimmer on our team swim? Of course the distance is a matter of age and ability but you can get a general idea from the table below. Just for kicks we’ve calculated the distance in miles per year, assuming a five day workout for 48 weeks. Wow!

Age    Distance/Workout     Calculated Annual Distance

5-10           1000-3000 yards                 135 - 410 miles/year

11-14         4000-5000 yards                 545 - 680 miles/year

15-18         5000-8000 yards                  680 - 1090 miles/year

A Poem

 The contest lasts only moments

Though the training has taken years.

It wasn’t the winning alone

That was worth the work and tears.

The applause will be forgotten

The prize will be misplaced,

But the long hard hours of practice

Will never be a waste.

For in trying to win you build a skill,

You learn that winning depends largely upon will.

You never grow by how much you win,

You only grow by how much you put in.

So any new challenge you have just begun

Put forth your total best,

And you have already won!
